Knitting Socks Essentials: What You Need to Start

So, you're interested in knitting some socks? I think you'll find them rewarding and surprisingly easy!

What you'll need-

All you need to knit socks is appropriate yarn in your (or your gift recipient's) favorite color, double-pointed needles, a pattern, basic knitting skills, and a commitment to the project. Sock knitting is even easier with a well-equipped knitting bag since you will have your tools gathered to begin any project right away. And this will increase the likelihood of your success! While you can always purchase more knitting tools, the few essential items I recommend are highly portable, simple, and inexpensive.

Double pointed needles in the size needed for your project. I recommend a 5-needle set just in case you lose one.

♥ Enough yarn to complete the project. Each pattern should list how much yarn you'll need and what weight. I recommend you start with worsted-weight sock yarn since the project will go quickly, and the yarn contains nylon for durability. You want the first sock you knit to last!

♥ A clear copy of the pattern. If the author gives you several different sizes, I recommend you make a copy of it and highlight the size you are making. After making the socks write in pencil at the top of the page in the book whether you liked the project and what changes you would make next time.

♥ A needle gauge and stitch gauge with a built-in ruler and holes for measuring needle sizes.

Retractable tape measure or ruler showing inches and centimeters

Large-eyed tapestry needle

Stitch markers - inexpensive ones will do great!

Small sewing scissors

♥ Crochet hooks slightly smaller than your project needles. For worsted-weight socks, sizes D and F might be a place to start.

♥ A self-sticking notepad means moving it up and down the page to mark your spot if you need to leave. You can also write yourself a note for later.

♥ A knitting bag that is not too big and makes you smile!

♥ Bonus-not critical, but nice would be individual point protectors or double-pointed needle holders. These keep stitches from sliding off the needle when you put your project down. And they keep your needles from poking a hole in your beautiful knitting bag!
